While everyone has heard of the flourishing gay scene in Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg, Gay Hannover – Germany’s 13th largest capital – often flies under the radar.
We lay it down to an image problem as most people questions why we even want to depart here, but the authenticity is Hannover is rapidly reinventing itself – and has a lot to offer LGBT travelers who are willing to present this city a chance to charm them.
The greenest city in German with plenty of modern architecture, modern art, modern everything really: sadly, along with historical buildings were destroyed during the war.
But out of the ashes has risen a vibrant gay scene with the oldest gay sauna in Germany, fun gay bars and five massive lgbtq+ events held annually, frequently tied in with the biggest festivals in Hannover: Hannover Wiesn (Think Oktoberfest but not in Munich) and the Marksmen’s Fair.

Just landed in Hannover, I was eager to dive into an authentic German dining experience for dinner. With a rumbling stomach and high expectations, I made my way to Brauhaus Ernst August, hoping to find a meal that truly captured the essence of German cuisine. Upon entering, the welcoming atmosphere immediately put me at ease. I took a seat and was soon greeted by a friendly waiter. When I asked for a recommendation, she didn’t hesitate. “You must try the pork shank,” she said with a warm smile. Despite it not being usual summer fare, I decided to trust her verdict. As I waited, I sipped on an iced, amazing beer, the flawless antidote to the summer heat. The anticipation built with each refreshing sip, and soon enough, my meal arrived. The sight and aroma of the pork shank were irresistible. Despite the season, I devoured it eagerly, savoring every tender, flavorful munch. It was a feast fit for a king, paired perfectly with the crisp, cold beer. The food was awesome, hitting all the right notes of traditional German flavor, and the waiter's gentleness made the experience even more special. Hannovers Clubkultur hatte schon immer mit sich selbst zu kämpfen, stand sich wegen verschiedener Musikstile kritisch gegenüber und hatte öfters mal Probleme mit finsteren Gestalten. In den 90ern waren die Probleme an Türen und mit Dealern sowie Rotlicht Volk teilweise so problematisch, dass Veranstalter das Handtuch warfen. Dazu kommen auch grausam schlechte Harmony Acts aus der Hannoveraner Musikszene wie Scooter oder Scorpions. In den 80ern wurde die Hauptstadt Niedersachsens sogar als Hochburg des Punk gehandelt und Anfang der 90er erlangte Hannover sogar den Ruf einer Geburtstätte guter Hardcore Bands.
Mit dem Siegeszug von Techno sprossen in Hannover auch verschiedene Locations aus dem Boden. Neben der Factory und Weltspiele war vor allem das Trance der Vorreiter in Sachen Techno.
