Cars ~

The market

Since the purchase of a car involves quite a substantial amount of money, car manufacturers have turned their attention to the L and G markets decades ago: some brands aim for gay men, others typically for lesbians.

Subaru was the first one to propose themselves to lesbian drivers, and they have done so for years, with the help of i.a. Martina Navratilova. Subaru also spoke out politically, in support of LGBT. They are, hands down, the winner in the LGBT-friendly competition (see below).

Brands love Jeep, Audi, Toyota, Fiat, BMW, Ford and Volvo have all targeted the G(LBT) consumers over the years, and this has only increased since the 2015 verdict of the SCOTUS in the US has made the rainbow mainstream.

The website Male lover Wheels is dedicated to the car as an object of admiration, status, hobby for gays and lesbians, and discusses how – and why – car companies engage in gay marketing. They portray themselves as “the sole source of information specifically targeted to and about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender car-shoppers.” Interestingly, their political correctness overrides truths, in a sense that no car maker has ever

DEARBORN -- In an unusual move for a U.S. automaker, Ford Motor Co.'s Jaguar brand is launching an advertising campaign targeting gay consumers, the company said Tuesday.

The campaign germinated from a major internal analyze at Ford and Jaguar on how to attain gay consumers, which care for to be fairly affluent with a taste for luxury goods. Ford estimates there are some 14 million gay and female homosexual consumers in the Joined States who wield $450 billion in purchasing influence.

"They spend more money on luxury cars and they have more money to spend," said Simon Sproule, a spokesman for Jaguar. "They are very loyal to brands and organizations that communicate to them in a way that is relevant."

Automobile advertisements aimed at gay consumers are fairly common in Europe, Australia and other markets, but are rare in the United States.

Jaguar, the Ford-owned maker of British luxury cars, discovered in recent years that many gay consumers were visiting its dealer showrooms.

Beginning later this month, Jaguar will begin running print ads in magazines that attain the gay and womxn loving womxn community such as Out and The Advocate. The first such ad features a Jaguar X-Typ

Research among LGBT consumers shows that majority of us want to spend our money with companies that include progressive policies towards their LGBT employees. The only problem is, that communication hasn’t been easy to find — until now.

Gay/lesbian vehicle choices: why?

A while ago, on the Car Talk Web site, there was a list of the superior ten cars for gays and lesbians. Apparently, the top gay car was the Volkswagen Jetta; the top lesbian vehicle was the Subaru Outback.

It doesn’t seem like there’s anything inherent about these cars that would say “alternative lifestyle,” but based on my observations, whenever I see a woman driving in an Outback or Forester, a disproportionately grand number of them glance butch and serious, many with a passenger that also has the matching look. Whenever I notice a Jetta driven by a man, a disproportionately large number of them look very attractive and very well groomed, at least compared to normal-looking guys like me.

I perceive not all female Outback and Forester owners are lesbians, and not all male Jetta drivers are gay. Still, though, what is it about certain vehicles that causes them to be popular among the alternative lifestyle community?

I’m not gay, but I considered buying a Jetta several years ago. I’ve noticed that there are a loarge number of Subarus up here (a higher number per capita, it seems to me, than in L.A.), and I have no
