A brief history of the public toilet as a political battleground

Following a Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of “sex”,  the EHRC (Equality and Human Rights Commision) has issued interim guidance on what this means for single-sex spaces in Britain. The guidance states that, in workplaces and services open to the general, trans women should not be allowed to apply women’s toilets and transgender men should not be allowed to use men’s toilets (in some circumstances, according to the EHRC, they can also be excluded from facilities corresponding to their assigned sex at birth.) While this guidance is not legally binding, it is is an outrageous attack on the human rights of trans people in Britain, which will make existing as a trans person in public even harder – exactly what the anti-trans movement wants.

While transphobia is the moral panic du jour of Britain's media and political establishment, public bathrooms have always been an intensely politicised site. Now then, since I wasn’t in the market to gave strange guys execute that sort of thing to me, I can’t say I ever popped by at 7:15. However, it seems to me that this is a better way to obtain the crap beat out of you than to get some sort of earthly delight. So, I figure…
(A) Gay bashers post such notes in order to beat up those who show up
(B) Gay people send such notes and are beaten up by queer bashers who respond
© Both A & B occur, which would create for an interesting sight.
(D) Gay people send such notes and are met by other male lover people and all is well.

Anyone know which of those was most frequent? Like I said, it seems like a hoax to me, but then I guess it was harder to meet homosexuals back then which would explain why you don’t see as many notes now (more acceptance). But even still, there’s got to be a surpass way. Oh well… such is the mind of white heterosexual upper-middle class suburban youth.

Let’s Examine the Phenomenon of Cruising Bathrooms Through 4 Famous Queer Men

Throughout history and for a variety of reasons, queer men have looked to public bathrooms as places to get laid. Some men enjoy cruising public restrooms because they’re turned on by the exhibitionism and the possibility of getting caught, while others see it as a place to anonymously and discretely have a same-sex encounter in times when being outed as queer carries severe social, political and legal consequences.

Cruising public restrooms has develop an ingrained part of queer history, with mixed feelings surrounding it. On one hand, it’s considered so seedy, sexy and transgressive that “toilet tramp” hookup scenes have develop a common scenario in gay porn (and even inspired drawings of homosexual erotic illustrator Tom of Finland).

On the other hand, it’s also considered by some to be a dark side of gay sexuality and history that has been used to shame queer men for their otherwise harmless sexual proclivities (often in the name of protecting children or public decency).

Noting both sides, gay video game designer Robert Yang made a bathroom cruising video game in 2017 entitled The
