Baby Reindeer strikes a painful chord for gay and bi men, and I know why: grooming and rape are common

Richard Gadd’s critically acclaimed Netflix series Baby Reindeer has proved wildly popular since its release two weeks ago. It’s a harrowing, semi-autobiographical tale about a young attracted to both genders man who is stalked by an older gal. Much of the discussion around the show has focused on “Martha”, the fictional portrayal of Gadd’s real-life stalker. But Child Reindeer is also a story of how trauma can shape the introduce, of sexual violence and its far-reaching impact, and sexuality.

For two years, I worked on Baby Reindeer as the show’s Queer consultant, reviewing scripts to feed back on how LGBTQ+ people and issues are represented, providing coaching on creating an inclusive set for cast and crew, and ultimately, acting as a resource to answer questions or concerns from anyone working on the show.

Since it aired, I’ve been inundated with messages from gay and bi men telling me how hard they initiate it to watch. And I’m not surprised. Rarely has a show portrayed a male victim of sexual assault with such grit and realism. For many, they say it’s the series’ fourth episode that is mo

Understanding Intimate Partner Abuse in the LGBTQ+ Group

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), also known as national violence, partner abuse, or dating violence, refers to the various means of control used by an abuser against their loved one in an intimate connection. According to the Centers for Disease Control, IPV includes many forms of abuse, including “physical force, sexual violence, stalking and psychological aggression (including coercive tactics) by a current or former intimate spouse (i.e., spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, dating website partner, or ongoing sexual partner).” Anyone—regardless of their identity, or that of their partner—can experience IPV.

However, misogynist gender roles, racial/ethnic stereotypes and institutional discrimination, and economic insecurity, put certain segments of the population at greater risk, such as women, BIPOC people, those living in poverty, and younger adults. For LGBTQ+ people, these same social determinants compound with homophobic and transphobic stigma, creating even greater risk of IPV among the community.

Sexual health for lgbtq+ and bisexual men

Having unprotected penetrative sex is the most likely way to pass on a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Using a condom helps defend against HIV and lowers the risk of getting many other STIs.

If you’re a man having sex with men (MSM), without condoms and with someone fresh, you should have an STI and HIV try every 3 months, otherwise, it should be at least once a year. This can be done at a sexual health clinic (SHC) or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic. This is important, as some STIs do not produce any symptoms.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a liver infection that's spread by a virus in poo.

Hepatitis A is uncommon in the UK but you can fetch it through sex, including oral-anal sex ("rimming") and giving oral sex after anal sex. MSM with multiple partners are particularly at risk. You can also get it through contaminated food and drink.

Symptoms of hepatitis A can show up up to 8 weeks after sex and incorporate tiredness and feeling sick (nausea).

Hepatitis A is not usually life-threatening and most people make a packed recovery within a couple of months.

MSM can dodge getting hepatitis A by:

Texas Officials Complicit in Gang Rape and Sexual Slavery of Gay Black Male, ACLU Charges

Roderick Johnson, a Navy veteran serving occasion for a non-violent crime, has been bought and sold by gangs, raped, abused, and degraded nearly every day.

In a legal complaint that reads prefer a nightmare scenario from the graphic HBO prison drama ""Oz,"" the ACLU detailed the story of 33-year-old Navy veteran Roderick Johnson of Marshall, Texas, who for the last 18 months has been bought and sold by gangs, raped, abused, and degraded nearly every evening.

""Prison officials knew that gangs made Roderick Johnson their sex slave and did nothing to aid him,"" said Margaret Winter, Associate Director of the ACLU's National Prison Plan. ""Our lawsuit shows that Texas prison officials consider black men can't be victims and believe lgbtq+ men always want sex -- so they threw our client to the wolves.""

According to the ACLU complaint, Johnson appeared before the prison's all-white classification committee seven separate times asking to be placed in safe keeping from predatory prisoners. Instead of protecting Johnson, the ACLU complaint charges, the committee members taunted him and called him a ""d
