About the Governor
Janet Trafton Mills was sworn in as the 75th Governor of Maine on January 2, 2019.
Governor Mills is the first woman governor of Maine. In her historic victories, she earned more votes than any governor in Maine history and is the first governor since 1970 to be elected with a majority of the vote for both terms in office.
As Governor, she led Maine through a global pandemic with nation-leading results, including one of the top vaccination rates and one of the lowest death rates in the nation, protecting the lives and livelihoods of Maine people.
Under her leadership, Maine’s GDP has experienced the strongest GDP growth in Fresh England and outperformed the economic growth of larger states like California, Fresh York, and Virginia. In fact, Maine has experienced more economic growth over the last four years than it did in the preceding fifteen.
She has expanded health care to more than 100,000 Maine people, cut the uninsured rate by more than any other state in the nation, fully funded schools for the first time in Maine history, raised the minimum lecturer salary, delivered free society college, cut taxes for Maine retirees, increased the Rainy Day Fu
Human Rights Campaign Endorses Janet Mills for Maine Governor

WASHINGTON — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest female homosexual, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Janet Mills in her bid to develop the next governor of Maine.
“As Attorney General of Maine, Janet Mills has fought tirelessly against discrimination and worked to make certain that all Mainers own an equal opportunity for success,” said HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof. “A proven commander, Janet is the evident choice for fair-minded voters who want to persist moving Maine forward as a welcoming and inclusive state. WHEREAS, the Stonewall riots that began on June 28, 1969, sparked the LGBTQ rights movement in America; and
WHEREAS, during these riots, LGBTQ citizens, led by transgender women of hue, rose up and resisted police harassment that arose out of discriminatory criminal laws that have since been declared unconstitutional; and
WHEREAS, in the decades since the Stonewall riots, Celebration celebrations have taken place around the country every June to commemorate this historic turning point for the LGBTQ community; and
WHEREAS, following the 1984 murder of Charlie Howard, a young gay man in Bangor, LQBTQ Mainers came together to form the Maine Lesbian/Gay Political Alliance, now known as EqualityMaine; and
WHEREAS, as a national leader for LGBTQ equality, Maine has included LGBTQ people in the state’s hate crimes, parentage, and anti-bullying laws; and
WHEREAS, the people of Maine voted to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in 2005 andin favor of marriage equality in 2012; and

Yesterday, the Maine Democrats hosted a Pride Month insist conference to celebrate the progress made on Homosexual issues under Gov. Janet Mills — and to highlight the importance of defeating Paul LePage, who has a long tape of attacking LGBTQ+ Maine people.
The Portland Press Herald reported how speakers emphasized that “the candidates’ road records make it clear which … is a real defender of sexual and gender diversity.”
In her first year in office, Gov. Mills stood by LGBTQ+ children by signing a bill banning conversion therapy. LePage had vetoed a similar bill just a year before.
With Gov. Mills’ support, Maine has banned the “gay panic” legal defense, restored benefits to military veterans discharged under ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ defeated legislative actions to ban transgender girls from school sports and transgender women from receiving services at women’s homeless shelters, and more.
