Gay-Friendly Bars & Clubs in Metro Detroit

Adam’s Apple

Oh, she’s understated and she’s fun! Adam’s Apple is a smaller space in Warrendale that is famous for karaoke nights on Thursdays, so get those singing pipes tuned and ready to belt. It’s also more of a chatty bar where you can hold a pleasant conversation with your crew or a friendly stranger. Both owned and operated by trans women, Adam’s Apple is well-known as a welcoming space for trans folk. But of course, all are welcome at this quaint neighborhood bar.

Menjo’s Entertainment Complex

Madonna worshippers, this is where you want to be. Not only can you sway to a plethora of Madonna jams in one night here, but you can literally dance on the floor she danced on when she was 16 and unknown! WOW. As one of

I have not worked on this blog in years. I leave it up because it documents history. Some of my comments are outdated and not accurate. I only posted the stories that I was told. That is why I left the comments sections on each bar open so people could chime in with their thoughts/opinions. There still are a lot of bars I could list that I never got around to I perceive. The Gold Coast is closed, what is left? The gay bar is dead but for a few. I have discovered an alternative to the gay bar, the homosexual campground. Gay campgrounds are much like the former gay bars, you own a sense of group and you can observe your friends every weekend. My favorite is Campit  in Saugatuck, MI. (Actually it is in Fennville)

1. FERNDALE

Ferndale is well-known as the most LGBTQ-friendly neighborhood in metro Detroit, with many LGBTQ organizations, businesses and residents. Ferndale is home to Affirmations society center, Matrix MAC Health (formerly the Michigan AIDS Coalition) and numerous other LGBTQ and progressive organization groups. Located just north of Detroit, between 8 and 10 Mile roads along the Woodward aisle, Ferndale is easily available from major highways.

According to the latest census, Ferndale is second only to tiny neighbor Pleasant Ridge for a percentage of households with same-sex couples. (In fact, Pleasant Ridge ranks among the superior 10 nationally.) Ferndale’s former mayors, David Coulter and Craig Covey are both openly gay men. The city has numerous LGBT-owned shops, restaurants, bars and theaters, and many more LGBTQ-friendly establishments.

“In the starting of the ’80s, Ferndale was a blank slate,” said former mayor Covey. “The downtown was vacant. You could roll a bowling ball down the middle of 9 Mile and not hit anything.”

Home values were declining; the storefronts downtown were almost entirely empty except for a few adult bookstores, nail salons, wig shops and

Re: Hayloft

Here's some more!

A neighbor had told Jimmy's mother that Jimmy had been seen dressed as a girl going into a local gay bar called The Hayloft. When his mother told this to Jimmy at home, he told her to settle at the kitchen table and wait while he left the room. When he reappeared, he was in drag. His mother later told a comrade of Candy's that "I knew then... that I couldn't stop Jimmy. Candy was just too charming and talented." - http://www.warholstars.org/stars/candy.html

After attending Catholic schools, Kikel entered St. John?s University in Queens, NY in 1960. On the outside, he was a conventional student majoring in English. He joined a fraternity and had a girl friend. But on weekend nights, he frequented gay bars in nearby Jackson Heights and on Long Island. It was around this time that he brought his sister (his only sibling) to a gay bar called the Hayloft. - https://markthomaskrone.wordpress.com/c ... n-history/
